winter gear for Swedish Lapland

Winter gear for Swedish Lapland?

By Laponice

You're dreaming of a trip to the far north, to Swedish Lapland, and you're wondering whether you'll be able to adapt to the (very) low winter temperatures. But there's no secret to dressing for the Nordic cold. With temperatures dropping as low as 35 degrees below zero celsius, we've come up with some recommendations on how to dress for winter in Swedish Lapland.

To pack in your suitcase

In winter, in Arjeplog's Arctic climate, temperatures range from 0 to -35 degrees. To make the most of your stay, it's important to observe certain principles, the most important of which is the 3-layer technique.

Rather than layering warm clothes on top of each other, it's more effective to dress with specific layers. Here's a list of our essentials to pack in your suitcase.

First of all, you'll need clothes that fit close to your body. These will form the first layer(Base Layer in the video below), whose purpose is to evacuate perspiration and conserve heat:

  • Thermal underwear from Damart, Merinos, Decathlon, Icebreaker, Haglof...
  • Pairs of warm socks, preferably in wool (Merino or other)

One or two changes of each are recommended.

The second layer of clothing, known as theMid Layer, is generally made up of :

  • a sweater or fleece jacket
  • pants (jeans, sports pants, hiking pants)

Lastly, you'll need to pack clothes that protect you from the wind and humidity, which will form the third layer, known as theOuter Layer:

  • Warmly lined winter coat/blouson/Parka (for city outings)
  • Lined "ski"-style overtrousers (for city outings)
  • Warmly lined winter hiking boots
  • Warm woollen cap to protect ears
  • Neck cover or choker
  • Warmly lined gloves (mittens or other)
  • A "good pair" of sunglasses with a good protection factor, even if they're rarely used in December and January, but more in February, March and, of course, April.
  • Hand and foot warmers for the coldest.

Cold weather equipment

However, to be able to withstand the extreme cold and take part in certain activities such as those we offer in our winter stays (aurora borealis viewing, dog sledding, ice fishing, snowmobiling...), special equipment is strongly recommended.

It's bulky and so specific that you're not sure you'll ever use it again. Laponice is happy to lend you some of this equipment* during your winter stay:

  • Thermal suit
  • Polyver boots
  • Gloves (mittens)
  • Double visor snowmobile helmet
  • Thin balaclava for snowmobile helmets

* This equipment has been tested and approved in the winter conditions you will encounter during your visit to Lapland. It is provided to you in good condition at the start of your stay, without any deposit to date, and you will return it before your departure in identical condition.

Our last piece of advice to finish packing: don't forget your swimsuit to enjoy a relaxing and revitalizing sauna at the end of the day! 😉
